Governance has been widely discussed in Mahabharat and Ramayan. A Dharmic government brings prosperity and wealth for all. Dharma can be applied in any field of administration. Anything that is logical and benefits a large group of people in a positive way is considered dharmic. When the head of Government follows dharma, then everyone in that land benefits. Why Yudhishthir was trusted to be a king by Bhagavan Krishna? Because he had a balanced dharmic personality and was the best administrator known in the world at that time. Let’s analyze some checks that ensured good governance for Yudhishthir.

  • Economy: Yudhishthir was the best economist of his time. The rule of Yudhishthir made the entire land profitable and ensured growth of mankind in all areas of development.
  • Security: There are three aspects of security – Internal, External, Spiritual.
    •  Internal: The best spycraft and policing is needed to ensure that people are secure. It is recommended to use a large number of spies to obtain information beforehand and act upon that. This ensures social justice to all.
    • External: Govt needs to keep all enemies of state in fear. The enemies must know that any misadventure may have heavy penalties
    • Spiritual: The State needs to maintain spiritual ideology to ensure justice based on a common ideology. Spiritual health and spiritual advancement is considered the highest objective of a state. While most countries of the world have a state ideology to protect, India is the only country in the world without a state ideology. Without ideology a state cannot differentiate and defeat its enemies
    • Food: Usually food was never taxed. Only certain Alcohols and intoxicants were taxed after a minimum quota.
    • Immigration: People’s movements across regions was recorded. Because that’s the way to understand demographics.
  • Justice: Swift justice delivered quickly is the hallmark of a successful state. When the court takes months or even years to decide on important matters then it is the failure of the state. Slowly people lose faith in such court system and take decisions independently. In Yudhishthir’s courts and all other local courts, justice was delivered instantaneously.
  • Education: State never interfered in Vedic education system which in turn was a teacher and pupil driven. Teachers received remuneration as per the pupil’s ability to pay. Teachers who were not able to maintain themselves were paid by the state. Graduates were easily absorbed by Administration and private businesses as per popularity and school recommendations.
  • Healthcare: Healthcare was free for all just like education. Healthcare facilities were maintained by the state.
