According to Sanatana Dharma or Hindutva or Hinduism, owning a weapon for self Defence is the religious duty of every head of the family.
Hindu Values allow every self respecting person to defend themselves against any aggression. There is also a section of population responsible to protect weaker sections from any aggression. Vedic shastra are very clear on the right of every individual to protect against six basic types of aggressors:
- One who attacks with deadly weapons
- One who attacks country
- One who sets fire to someone’s home
- One who tries to kidnap one’s wife or loved ones
- One who plunders riches
- One who gives poison
These rights are inalienable rights of every practitioner of Sanatana Dharma wherever they live. We find that during Chandragupta Maurya reign, every family was responsible for their own security. The state maintained an Army, Secret Service and Judiciary. Organized armed forces were only maintained to protect against external armed enemies.
During the time of Mahabharat also, the state forces were responsible for protecting against only external attacks.
In ancient times, secret services of states and their justice departments provided state support to local populations on a need basis to protect the rights of weaker sections of society. In ancient China, Prefects provided that support through contractual employees and justice department. Policing local populations was considered as an insult by most self respecting people of the state. Dharma or the system of Truth and justice was followed by the entire population. In ancient Bharat, the concept of Janpad and Panchayat provided localized security and justice to locals. The concept of Panchayat has been prevalent in ancient Bharat since the time of Mahabharat. Panchayat was responsible for local protection and justice to all sections of society. During the medieval period when Islamic invaders attacked, local Janpads and Panchayats were shocked by the barbarism of Muslim looters. Initially, they were shocked but later organized themselves under Various Hindu Kings to defeat all Islamic invaders. Maratha rulers used the same techniques of invaders to defeat them. That also explains the sophistication of ancient Chinese and Hindu social systems of effective local governance.
When British invaded India, they were surprised to see that there were no beggars, no thieves, no uneducated people and also women were protected.
In contrast, Britain was a chaotic place. In the 1860s, women were treated like animals in British society. Lynching of women was a common practice on mere suspicion. Children were treated as objects for royalty. None of these evil practices were found in Medieval Bharat. Islamic invaders used to sell Hindu women and children for their masters in Arabic lands. British were shocked at the wealth of Hindus and Buddhists of Bharat. British were also shocked at Muslim brutalities against Hindus.
To protect themselves from Muslim atrocities, British introduced police in India through East india company to first control indegenous population against any uprising.
In 1858, British crown regularized that police under British crown to control Hindus. They gradually disarmed the entire Hindu society. They made laws that penalized people from keeping weapons. After 1857 uprising, British were so scared of Native Hindu nationalists, that they even banned all local martial arts such as Kalaripayattu.
They created Civil services and Police services whose only objective was to keep Hindus under subjugation to maintain British wealth. Then, British looted India completely until Indian National Army under Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose threw British out of India.
Similarly in America which gained independence in 1776 from Britain, thirteen states combined fought against British over taxation laws. The decisive victory of Americans over British colonialists was caused due to George Washington’s brilliant recapture of Boston and also American privateers who captured Nova Scotia. Local Militia played an important role. Patriots won against loyalists across South Carolina and other southern states. Private arms played a big role in securing victory for patriots. Most Americans have forgotten this history.
But there is a common saying saying that history repeats itself if we are not prepared. All of us need to remember the American past and vow to never allow that to repeat itself.
Nation State political colonizers may not exist today but that ideology still remains. Nation state colonizers have been replaced by Faith based colonizers. The leftist ideology has permeated american educational institutions. That leftist ideology has the power to give political motives to criminal acts. For them any means is justified to put forward their ideology. In Indian context, Naxalism is the biggest leftist threat to rule of law.
In the USA, ANTIFA is the result of leftist ideology. Pan Islamic ideology has also infiltrated into the leftist bastions in US today. Ultra left wing ideology, Pan Islamic ideology and Left wing media are the new colonizers of Free society. Antifa will use any type of violence both online and physical against those who they brand as Right wing and White supremacists.
They include anarchists, ultra left islamists, Islamic terror supporters, Socialists, communists and social democrats. Since they are unorganized, they have emerged as the single biggest threat to law enforcement in democratic societies such as the US. In July 2019, Bill Cassidy and Ted Cruz introduced a non-binding resolution to declare Antifa as a domestic terror organization.
Recently, a federal judge ruled, ““Neither the Constitution, nor state law, impose a general duty upon police officers or other governmental officials to protect individual persons from harm — even when they know the harm will occur,” said Darren L. Hutchinson, a professor and associate dean at the University of Florida School of Law. “Police can watch someone attack you, refuse to intervene and not violate the Constitution.” The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that the government has a duty to protect persons who are “in custody,” he pointed out.” “Courts have rejected the argument that students are in custody of school officials while they are on campus,” Mr. Hutchinson said. “Custody is narrowly confined to situations where a person loses his or her freedom to move freely and seek assistance on their own — such as prisons, jails, or mental institutions.”
In the cases DeShaney vs. Winnebago and Town of Castle Rock vs. Gonzales, the supreme court has ruled that police agencies are not obligated to provide protection of citizens. In other words, police are well within their rights to pick and choose when to intervene to protect the lives and property of others — even when a threat is apparent.
In Caetano v. Massachusetts (2016), the Supreme Court reiterated its earlier rulings that “the Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in existence at the time of the founding” and that its protection is not limited to “only those weapons useful in warfare.”
In Federalist #46 James Madison wrote, “ how a federal army could be kept in check by state militias, “a standing army … would be opposed [by] a militia.””
The US Bill of Rights (12/15/1791) protects the individual right to keep and bear arms. I would encourage every qualified Hindu American to exercise their rights for self protection and self preservation. Hindu Americans should forget the British colonial campaign to disarm them as a colonial legacy of British imperialism in India. The Democrat’s propaganda against Gun ownership is mired with their selfish leftist and socialistic propaganda to disarm Americans. Democrats were the original colonial slave traders of US and they have the potential to become another if American citizens don’t oppose them over their Bill of Rights. It’s time for Hindu Americans to cherish the freedom given by American constitution and do not see gun ownership as a taboo.
Freedom brings responsibility that no one can forget.
